Summer is a great time to try a new outdoor activity

The great outdoors beckons with warm weather and longer days. Make the most of the season and find ways to enjoy each moment. Take a walk through your neighborhood and make it a point to soak in your surroundings: the trees, the flowers, the birds, and the clouds and sky.

As you explore the outdoors, try walking to a part of your neighborhood you don’t normally visit or exploring a park or nature trail in your community. Bird-watching is one inexpensive hobby you can enjoy during the nice summer weather.

Simply by changing the way you look at the world around you, you can find ways to sneak more physical activity into your summer days. Think about taking the stairs at work instead of the elevator. And when you go shopping, consider parking farther away from the entrance so you can get in a few extra steps. If you have children or grandchildren, being active as a family is a fun way to enjoy the summer weather while getting exercise. Try spending part or all of the day at a local park or playground together.

Be sure to talk with your health care provider before you begin any new exercise program.
